Vale Sabrose CIC 1star CIC 2 Star

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The Eventing international Spring Tour opened 24th February with the 1 and 2 star CIC competitions at Vale Sabroso In the Alentego region, just a few miles away from Comporta where the Show jumping Sunshine tour was taking place. Thursday is a rest day at the show jumping venue so it was no suprise when Marion Hughes showed up at Vale Sabroso to check us out. She has bred and sold some very good event horses and was keen to learn a bit more about our sport. She was suitably impressed and I think quite keen to” have a go” as she put it. So watch this space.

The First event was not without incident mostly due to the adverse weather conditions which were the worst ever recorded in Portugal. Rain rain and more rain!
The weather continued to disrupt the proceedings through the whole event, Thursdays dressage was postponed by a couple of hours which meant it was almost dark when the last competitor completed their test!!

Our horses all performed well, our only disappointment was Kassandra with Shane onboard. She had suffered a reaction to an injection administered for fly bits and was very uncomfortable throughout the test. She had to be withdrawn which was gutting for Shane who had put such a lot of work into her to prepare for this event.
Pimms, our 6 year old was lying 2nd in the 1star which was great as his co-owner and good friend of mine had come over to watch him perform. He was just pipped by Althea Bleekman on the 12 year old Billys boy.
Aristoteles was well placed in 4th in the 2 star in the company of some very good horses. I was particularly please with Shane’s sisters horse TLB Interactive as Rachel only flew in the day before fresh from her exams to ride him having trusted him to me to prepare. She rode him really well and he showed some flashes of what he will do when she will produce when she has more time.

Saturday was a different story…..the high winds of 100km per hour and torrential rain woke everyone bright and early and did not let up through out the day.
The One star managed to run as planned but the going deteriorated with each competitor. Chivas was early on and jumped a super clear with just a few time penalties but Pimms was the last horse to go and had very bad ground resulting in him having a handful of time penalties dropping him down the order to 6th.
Aristoteles stormed around the fastest of any in the two star and finished the day in 2nd place. I decided to withdraw Viper as this was to be her first 2star and I felt the conditions were not ideal for a green one at this level.
Sunday was another day of torrential rain and the Show Jumping phase was not easy.
Pimms pulled up a place to finish 5th and Chivas jumped his usual clear and finished a commendable 7th.
The two star had a nail biting finish but Duarte with Aristoteles and Karin Donkin with her last years winner Lamicell Charizard had identical scores so once again Karin took the very generous 1st prize of a Harley Davison motor Cycle!!!

Vale Sabrose Preliminary

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The first weekend of our stay in Vale Sabroso they held a Preliminary (similar to pre-novice) and combined training competition.
Our baby of the string Sea Top Boy owned by Deidre Lannigan was our entry in this class that also allows one and two star horses to enter. He performed really well and was double clear to finish 8th so we were all happy.
The older horses did the combined training classes and it was a great opportunity to get a practice in the main arenas for both dressage and show jumping the following weekend.
No one really knew where they were placed in these classes as no scores were posted it was really just a training event. The horses were all allowed a spin around the Prelim xc afterwards as a warm up for the following weeks competition.

Good start to Portuguese spring tour.

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Saturday saw the start of the spring tour of events in Portugal with the
National classes at Mata Du Duque.
After a few days of rain the going was perfect for all three phases and the
Sun shone all day!!
Mata Du Duque no longer run International classes but the facilities and
organisation are still as such.
With all Phases been on super sandy going our Groom Matthew was delighted
that no studs were required.

Fernhill Pimms performed his usual stunning dressage and lead from the
start in the CNC 1star, a clear
in both show-jumping and cross country secured him a win in this class. At
only his second start at this level, last time 2nd as he had a copule of xc time, he looked
confident and happy.

Loughnatousa Rua placed 4th in this class after having an unusual show jump
down. We were delighted with his cross country performance as he has taken time to get to grips
with this phase but really looked like the good horse we always believed he will be.

Chivas again was consistant and finished 7th, he is growing in maturity
with each run he has and by Barroca we think he will be really ready to go for it!!

We were very proud of our Junior rider Shane Power who made his debut on
his new ride for the season Killossery Kassandra, the Master Imp sired mare recently purchased from
Sarah Glynn. He did a respectable dressage test to leave him in the top few but a mistake in the
show jumping slipped him down the order a bit. However his cross country round was exemplary and
Shane gave the Mare a super ride to finish 8th.

Fernhill Viper made her 2 star debut with Carol on board and looked set to do a stunning Dressage until
the atmosphere got the better of her and she had a couple of inattentive moments in the canter work!!!
However she reformed herself in the other phases and finished 3rd. A great
result for her first attempt and she looks set to have a good Spring Tour.

The Sunday saw the Preliminary class take place with the dressage and show
jumping at the same venue as the previous day but the xc moved to the tamer but equally well
presented course in Villa Nova, St Estevo.

Francisco lead the dressage this time on an Irish horse “Sunset”, by Quality and bred by Denis Coakley
who is now based in Portugal. The horse is now owned by Vasco Canto Monix
who is enjoying his new role as event horse owner. Sunset recorded a super double clear and we were
all delighted for Vasco as he ran around after his horse with video camera in hand!!

Our new addition to the Fernhill string Fernhill Dust-up finished 2nd just
being pipped in the Dressage by Sunset. He found this level easy and will now move up to the 1 star next
week in Vale Sabroso.

Raheen Na Gun Combined Training Final

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

The Final of the combined training in Raheen Na Gun saw some hotly
contested finals.
With the absence of Fernhill Viper from the 1.10 final the door was open
for Julia Ponosonby and she took
full advantage of this winning the class and the league, congratulations
Julia and good Luck for the
coming season.

Sophie”s little project Cascasde took the spoils in his section as we
predicted and is now set to make his
eventing debut this season.

Thanks to the team at Raheen Na Gun for hosting the league which gave us
all a chance to brush up on
our dressage and show-jumping before the event season gets underway.

2nd Week South Leinster Combined Training

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Sunday saw the second leg ot the SL Combined Training League at Raheen Na Gun. Entries were well up and an early start was helped by the fact we live so close!!
Our horses were all so much better for the outing last week and excelled them selves by all winning a class or in Vipers case two!!
It was a first outing for Deidre Lannigans Fernhill Sea top and with Carol onboard he won the Pure Dressage Test14, though green his Potential was obvious and the Judge Poala Geiger was suitably impressed.
He went on to do a super Test in the Combined Training but a silly knock in the Show jumping just put him out of the placings.
Fernhill Cascade with Sophie Richards on board placed 4th in the Test 7 and WON his combined training, he really is coming into his own now and is on track to win the League in this section.
Shane Power our Junior rider was making his debut on the recent Fernhill purchase Killossery Kassandra. They showed how quickly a partnership has formed between them and placed 3rd in both the Pure Dressage test 32 and the 1.10 combined training. Shane now heads to Portugal with the mare to the Sunshine Tour eventing and hopes this will give him further experience with her before he returns home and appears before the selectors. Competition for a place on the Junior European team this year will be fierce so this trip should give him a head start.
Again Viper showed just how much she has matured over the winter and could not be beaten, winning both her classes by a comfortable margin she is really set up now for the trip to portugal.
Again well done to the Team at Raheen Na Gun, well organised and great facilities made for a good days competition.

South Leinster Combined Training

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Sunday 17th January.

The South leinster region Combined Training League started today in Raheen na Gun,  our neighbour Ger O’Briens equestrian facility.

Fernhill horses were out in force as its just  a  2 minute hack away.

Fernhill Viper who Carol is preparing for the Sunshine tour in Portugal in February has come up this year on great form from her winter break and won both the   Pure Dressage test 32 and the 1.10m show  jumping with dressage class. She was narrowly  beaten  by  Ivan Kelly on his impressive dressage horse Don Rosario in the test 27, so we could live with that!!! Fernhill Eagle was 2nd in the 1.10m combined training, his last competition on Irish soil as he is soon to be on his way to Phillip Dutton in the States who hopes to  have him Qualified for the next Olympics in London. So that will be one to watch out for.

Sophies baby Fernhill Cascade was placed in all his classes, 2nd in Combined training and 3rd in pure dressage so she was well pleased all her hard work with him has paid off.

This was a great outing for all and was very well supported despite the run of bad weather for the previous couple of weeks. The Sun did manage to shine on the day and all who came were well impressed with the organization and facilities at Raheen na Gun and the Secretary Sarah Lang tells me entries are bursting at the seams for the next competition on Sunday.

Portugal Winter Tour

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Saturday 21st November saw the start on the Portuguese Winter tour. A warm up National event was held in Vale Sabrose.

Our horses started the tour in great form, Fernhill Pimms lead the dressage and stayed there throughout the competition finishing in First place on his dressage score. Loughnatousa Rua was second and Chivas was third. So all in all a good weekend for fernhill!!

The Winter Tour continued in Vales Sabrose with the International 1 and 2 star events starting with the Vets inspection on 26th November. As always the beautiful venue of Vale Sabrose was looking great and the Sunshine was a bonus!!

The Cross country had a new designer this year in the form of Eric Winter so there were a few new questions and the course took a slightly different route and had a bit of an English flavor.

Fernhill Aristoteles as always was a star and Won the 2 star. He is such a poser and loved the atmosphere at the prize giving, the first three received Medals and lovely Trophies of cut glass horses.

Fernhill Aristoteles

Aristoteles winning 2 star Vale Sabrose

Rua did a super dressage test and show jumped clear leaving him well up the order. However the Cross Country was a different story!!! More training in this department before Barocca next week I think is in order!!!

Chivas was a dote, he tried so hard in the Dressage and was just a mark behind Rua he jumped class in the show jumping and just had a little glance off jumping into the second water when Duarte was a little quick off the corner and the fence took Chivas by surprise. We were delighted with him tho and feel he is a real prospect for the future.

My good friend and ex Fernhill rider Joao Duarte Silva won the 1 star which was a great result on his home bred and home produced horse who’s name I cannot spell!!!

Duarte receives his Medal in Vale Sabrose

The hospitality at Vale Sabrose is second to none and as always we were well fed and watered all week. Francisco Tudella really knows how to party and on the Saturday put on a great bash for everyone. The band of the Sunshine tour in the Spring returned to everyones delight and we danced the night away.

Dancing the night away in Portugal

The Final event of the Winter Tour was as usual in Barroca D’Alva, home of the Lupi family, great supporters of eventing In Portugal and fantastic hosts.

Aristoteles was contesting the Portuguese Championship with Duarte so was not in the International competition, he was favorite to win this after his recent good form with the horse but as we all know horses are great levelers and it just didn’t happen!! However Aristoteles did perform very well cross country and posted one of the fastest rounds of the day easily and comfortably so we feel he is well ready to move up to 3 star CIC on the Spring Tour.

The Silver Medal in this class was won by Fernhill Casino so he kept the Fernhill flag flying!!! He is now ridden by Ricardo Carrera for Portugal.

Rua lead the Dressage in a very competitive class and show jumped clear which left him in the lead going out to the Cross country, as he has had his problems cross country Duarte took him steady to give him confidence. He had time penalties but was clear which was a real bonus.

But the star of the weekend was Little Chivas who was Double Clear and finished 7th.

Again Joao won the 1 star and won the Bronze Medal with a horse he got from Fernhill for his cousin to contest The Junior European Championships on this year VA Fox an ex ride of Leslie Law. Second was another Fernhill rider Francisco Seabra with his own super Kannan sired 7 year old.

Our only representative in the 2 star was Francisco Seabra on his brother Duartes Irish bred Lord Sally field he finished 9th which was great for his first attempt at this level.

Barroca always run a National Competition at Pre Novice level for the young horses at this event. It gives the Young horses chance to experience atmosphere of an International without the pressure of the bigger fences. Fernhill Pimms fresh from his win in Vale Sabrose again lead from the outset to win this class.

All in all a good winter tour and a lot learned. Great education for our younger horses. Roll on February when it all starts again!!!
